Administrative history:
Established in 1973 and registered as a charitable organization in 1984, Hornby Island Daycare Society operates the island’s preschool and daycare programs. The aim of the society is to provide affordable and quality childcare to Hornby’s local residents and summer visitors. The society is non-profit and is funded through parent fees, fundraising, and volunteer efforts. The society’s Board of Directors is composed of parents.
The society was formed by Shelagh Johnston and Diane [?] with the aid of a Local Initiatives Project grant. The society was created in order to administer a preschool program for the island. Soon after the formation of the preschool a daycare program was initiated. In the late 1970s a kindergarten program was also offered (until kindergarten classes were offered by the Hornby Island Community School).
The society was previously located in the island’s old schoolhouse (now the Betty Smith Centre). When the schoolhouse was moved off of the school grounds in 1984, the society moved into another building on school grounds, at 2200 Sollans Road, where it is still located today.
Scope and content: The records pertain to the society’s formation, finances, fundraising, programs, and curricula. The majority of the handwritten documents were written by Shelagh Johnston. The collection includes textual records, correspondence, notes, newsletters, schedules, meeting minutes, financial documents, architectural drawings, a cookbook, flyers, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera.
Source of supplied title: Title is based on the creator of the collection.
Immediate source of acquisition: The collection contains several previously accessioned files, which were donated by Shelagh Johnston (990.7.2) in 1990 and the Hornby Island Daycare Society (992.1) in 1992, as well as collected by the archivist/committee members (985.154, 992.62, 992.197) between 1985 and 1991. All other original accession date(s) and donor(s) are unknown as Hornby Island Community Archives acquired the records several years prior to their being accessioned in 2017.
Arrangement: The original filing scheme of the records was reconstructed during archival arrangement on the basis of file markings on the documents in order to retain as much of the original order as possible. However, some rearrangement of the records may have occurred between donation and accessioning as the records were stored for a number of years and then transferred to the archives building before being accessioned and processed in 2017.
