Administrative history:
Formed in 1991, Hornby Island Community Action Network (H.I.C.A.N.) aimed to act as a coordinating network, facilitating communication between Hornby Island’s community and its various organizations and committees, in order to ultimately help institute solutions to the community’s needs.
After conducting a community survey, H.I.C.A.N.’s pilot project, which was funded by government grants, was geared toward empowering women and promoting women’s involvement in the community and in the decision-making process.
While in existence H.I.C.A.N. communicated and worked in particular with Hornby Island Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, Hornby Islands Trust, Hornby Island New Horizons Society, Hornby Island Women’s Centre (Network), Hornby Island Educational Society, Hornby Island Elder Housing Society and Hornby Island Home Support Society. The network held neighbourhood discussion groups to discuss community needs and solutions, published resource directories, and sponsored workshops.
Scope and content: The records pertain to the network’s formation, mandate, events and projects. The collection includes textual records, correspondence, reports, notices, surveys, and ephemera.
Source of supplied title: Title is based on the creator of the collection.
Immediate source of acquisition: Collection contains one previously accessioned file, which contains materials donated by Mitzka Bryans and collected by archivist Jan Bevan in 1991 (991.34), as well as one previously accessioned file containing a clipping collected by the archivist/committee member. All other original accession date(s) and donor(s) are unknown as Hornby Island Community Archives acquired the records several years prior to their being accessioned in 2016.
Arrangement: The original order of the materials has been retained in the archival arrangement.
