Biographical sketch: Doris Joy Upright was born in Aurora, Illinois in 1926 but spent most of her years growing up in Edmonton, Alberta. She later moved to Vancouver and after seeing an ad for Seabreeze Lodgeon Hornby Island she came on her own for a visit. She met Leo Savoie on the ferry and they were married the following Valentines Day, Doris moved to Hornby Island in 1956. She and Leo resided with “Granny” Savoie (Virginie) and cared for her in her later years. Doris and Leo had four children – Mary, Elaine, Remi and Paul. Doris was very active in the community, she was instrumental is establishing and administering the Hornby Medical Clinic, she served as the Chair of the Clinic Committee for 25 years, retiring in 1997, and in her honour the building that housed the Clinic was named the Doris Savoie Center. Doris was also very active in the Hornby Island Resident and Ratepayers Association (HIRRA), as well as in establishing the Hornby and Denman Community Health Care Society. For many years Doris served as the Witch at the annual kids Halloween party, she was well known for the tatting she sold at Christmas craft faires and she was instrumental in maintaining the little Catholic Church on Hornby Island. On June 25, 2017 Doris Savoie passed away at St.Joeseph’s Hospital in Comox, after a few years of poor health.

Scope and content: The collection contains extensive documents that reflect Doris’ meticulous record keeping of the household expenses for decades, as well as her involment in local governance and community volunteerism.

Immediate source of acquitsion: Doris Savoie’s daughters Mary and Elaine donated the records following her death in 2017.

Arrangement: The original filing scheme of the records was reconstructed during archival arrangement on the basis of file markings on the documents in order to reatian as much of the original order as possible.
