Biographical sketch: Carol was originally an American citizen, having spent at least some of her early years in the Pennsylvania area before moving to Victoria, BC. In 1970 as part of the “back to the land” movement she moved to Hornby Island with her husband Richard Martin and her 2 children. Carol was a watercolour painter, an avid gardener and naturalist. In 1976 she was elected Hornby Island Trustee and served for 17 years as Trustee, as well as on the Executive as Vice-Chair and Chairperson. Carol was also elected as the Regional District Electoral Area ‘A’ Director and served on the Executive of the Hornby Island Residents and Ratepayers Association and on the Conservancy Hornby Island board. Carol was employed at the Hornby Island post office for 12 years and ran a nursery for heritage roses with her second husband Tony Quin. 

Scope and content: This collection covers decades of issues related to local politics due to Carol’s extensive involvement in many parts of Hornby Island’s governance, with particular emphasis on land use and environmental concerns and the acquisition of Crown land for preservation purposes by the Hornby community.

Immediate source of acquisition:  Documents were stored in Carol Quin’s home and then garage and donated to the Archives by her husband Tony Quin after her death. 

Arrangement:  The original filing scheme of the records was reconstructed during archival arrangement on the basis of file marking on the documents in order to retain as much of the original order as possible.
