Biographical sketch: Robert Joseph Sarti was born to an Italian family in New York on March 13, 1943. He began working in the newspaper business at age 17 with Long Island Press, moving onto Phoenix to take a job with Arizona Republic and eventually to Canada in 1968 with his wife and son, Doug Sarti. In Vancouver he worked for the Vancouver Sun for 30 years, as well as for a variety of underground publications such as Georgia Straight, The Grape and Open Road under various pseudonyms. For decades Bob Sarti was the social conscience of the Vancouver Sun, writing stories about the Downtown Eastside, the environment and prisoners rights. Bob left his employment with the Sun in 1998 and retired to Hornby Island with his partner Muggs Sigurgeirson. He wrote 3 plays – Bruce: The Musical, Yippies in Love and The Militant Mothers of Raymur. Bob also wrote an unpublished manuscript Bandit At Three O’clock, which told the true story of an attempted breakout and hostage taking at the BC Penitentiary and the following trial of two prisoner rights activists implicated. Bob suffered a debilitating stroke in 2016 and died at the age of 77 October 12, 2020 at his home on Hornby Island.
Scope and content: This collection contains the unpublished manuscript written by Bob Sarti titled “Bandit at Three O’clock” and contains extensive documents related to the events in the novel as researched by Bob Sarti.
Source of supplied title: Title is based on the creator of the collection.
Immediate source of acquisition: Bob Sarti and his partner Muggs Sigurgeirson donated his papers to the Archives in 2019.
Arrangement: The original filing scheme of the records was reconstructed during archival arrangement on the basis of file markings on the documents in order to retain as much of the original order as possible.
