Title: Ann Newdigate Collection
Level of description: collection
General material designation: textual records and graphic materials
Extent: 104 cm
Creator(s): Ann Newdigate
Dates of creation: 1974-2018
Biographical sketch: Ann Newdigate was born in Grahamstown, South Africa in 1934 where she attended University of Cape Town and received a B.A. in African and English Literature in 1964, and where she worked for anti-apartheid political parties and the National Union of South Africa Students. Political circumstances led her to immigrate to Canada in 1966. In 1975 she completed a B.F.A at University of Saskatchewan in painting and printmaking followed by travel to England, Scotland and Wales to study tapestry weaving returning to Canada for the period of 1977-1979 to teach workshops in basic design at the University of Saskatchewan and the community college Emma Lake. In 1980-81 Ann Newdigate returned to Scotland to complete post-graduate studies in the Tapestry Department of the Edinburgh College of Art, followed by the completion of her M.F.A at University of Saskatchewan in 1986 where she continued to teach in the Department of Art History. In 1990 Ann Newdigate was invited to be a Visiting Fellow and lecturer to establish an under-graduate and graduate course in tapestry at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Throughout her career Ann Newdigate showed her work and was a lecturer and speaker on the international tapestry stage. After residing in Saskatoon for 33 years her and her husband John Mills moved full time to Hornby Island, BC. where Ann Newdigate continued her professional life and the pursuit of art in a myriad of forms. On December 13, 2023 at the age of 89 Ann Newdigate died on Hornby Island.
Scope and content: This collection is dominated by Ann Newdigate’s professional work as a Canadian artist, mainly but not limited to the medium of tapestry.
Source of supplied title: Title is based on the creator of the collection.
Immediate source of acquisition: Files and boxes were stored in Ann’s home on Hornby Island, gathered and donated by her son Julian Mills in December 2024.
Arrangement: The original filing scheme of the records was reconstructed during archival arrangement on the basis of file markings on the documents in order to retain as much of the original order as possible. File headings in “quotation marks” indicate files named and initially arranged by Ann Newdigate, though removal or recording of some material may have occurred during the archival arrangement for clarity and concision. Some notebooks were dismantled for archival preservation and in these instances pages were numbered in pencil.
Note: Ann Newdigate is often shortened in the finding aids as A.N. In the material Ann Newdigate is also referred to as both “Ann Mills” or “Ann Newdigate Mills” or “Ann Newdigate”, note that her husband’s name was John Mills. In 1989 Ann chose to be known, professionally at least, though it is unclear if this was also true in her private life, consistently as Ann Newdigate.
Language of materials: English
