Biographical sketch:
Donald Patrick Hogan was born on December 22, 1950 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to William and Viola Hogan. In 1969 Hogan moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he lived until 1986, the year he moved to Hornby Island with his horse Thunder.
Hogan married Janet Louise Sasaki on April 2, 1971. They had two children together, Shawn Patrick Hogan (1973) and Mary Ellen Hogan (1975). Sasaki divorced Hogan in 1988, after separating from him in 1984.
While living in Winnipeg, Hogan briefly worked for Old Dutch Foods Ltd. and Inland Steel & Forgings Ltd. (he sustained a workplace injury at the latter), formed a small business named Foresight Enterprises in 1977 with Alf Skowron which bought and resold stock and supplies from auctions and bankrupt businesses, and was ordained by mail order as a “Minister for Life” by the Universal Life Church, Inc. (located in Modesto, California) in 1979. In the early 1970s Hogan became interested in politics, specifically the legalization of marijuana – a campaign he would be involved in for much of his life (Hogan proclaimed himself a “High Priest of Pot”). In the 1984 federal election he ran unsuccessfully as an independent candidate.
While living on Hornby, Hogan squatted and lived with various friends, wrote and published a number of poems, essays, stories and novels, and started an online business, Canadian Content, which never fully launched.
He moved to Vancouver Island sometime in the 2000s, where he died on July 10, 2016 at the age of 65.
Scope and content: The records pertain to Hogan’s personal life, his campaign for the legalization of marijuana, and his writing. The collection consists of textual records, financial documents, medical records, court documents, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera.
Source of supplied title: Title is based on the creator of the collection.
Immediate source of acquisition: The collection contains several previously accessioned files: several files were donated by Donald Hogan (991.37, 992.184) in 1991 and 1992, one file was donated by Bob Cain (992.45) in 1992, and two files were collected by the archivist/committee members (992.46, 993.17) in 1992 and 1993. All other original accession date(s) and donor(s) are unknown as Hornby Island Community Archives acquired the records several years prior to their being accessioned in 2016.
Arrangement: The original order of the materials has been retained in the archival arrangement.
