Biographical sketch: Robert (Bob) Cain worked as a professional photographer on Hornby Island for over 50 years.

Scope and content: A photographic chronicle of social and cultural events of the Hornby Island community.

Source of supplied title: The creator of the records is the source of the supplied title.

Immediate source of acquisition: Bob Cain and Kathi Linmann. Bob Cain had these photos in his studio from previous years of printing and he and Kathi went through them to choose what they thought would be a good addition to the Hornby Archives. Kathi put a lot of work into identification of people and dates if this was not already noted on the photographs. 

Arrangement: The photos were organized  in two different ways when received – either by year or in categories created by Bob Cain. As well, most photos were marked with his particular numbering system (see Notes). While sorting the photos for this collection I ordered them numerically based on Bob Cain’s numbering system, within the original designation of either year or category that they were originally received. This contributed greatly to my ability to remove duplicates from the collection. Occasionally I would remove a photo from a “year”  designation and place it in a “category” designation if it was part of a series of photos already in the category designation, otherwise photos that had been arranged in the “year” designation remained there even if a category designation could have applied.

Notes: The vast majority of Bob Cain’s photos are marked with his numbering system – xx-xx-xx. The first two numbers are for the last two digits of the year. The second series of numbers represents the film number of the year, starting in January with the #1 for the first film he used that year. The last series of numbers represents the # that picture was on the contact sheet. Each film has 36 exposures on a sheet.

Related Group of Records: Previously accessioned collections often contain photographs belonging to Bob Cain, most notably the Photograph Collection R.G 24, due to the fact that his photographs were so prevalent in the community. Credit to the photographer may not always be noted, although it often is.
